Price of sugar soars in Medan

MEDAN, North Sumatra: The price of sugar in North Sumatra has been going up in the past week due to a shortages, sugar traders reported on Thursday.

Last week, the price of sugar stood at Rp 4,200 (US$ 0.44 cents) per kilogram, but the price has risen to Rp 4,400 per kilogram, said a trader in Sentral Medan market here.

The rising price was apparently caused by sugar hoarding, the trader said. -- Antara
