Presidential election must be peaceful

Indonesia's presidential election is not an all-out, exclusive and definitive war. The Sept. 20 presidential runoff is a competition between two knights, to be held based on democratic values.

Whoever wins the second round of the presidential election will be subject to the regulation stating that a president can serve only for two five-year terms.

The presidential runoff will likely turn into a fierce battle, as only two of five presidential candidates -- incumbent President Megawati Soekarnoputri and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyno -- have advanced to the second round of the election.

This daily believes that a smooth process and a legitimate result of the next election are more important than who wins.

The April 5 legislative election and the first round of the presidential election on July 5 have met the criteria for a democratic election.

In this regard, we hope that all people, including the political elite, bring about a smooth and peaceful election.
