President to open bazaar
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said President Soeharto is scheduled to open a bazaar at the National Monument on Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, Wednesday.
At the opening ceremony, the President will also inaugurate the national cooperative movement called Gerakan Sejuta Anggota Koperasi (the Movement of One Million Cooperative Members).
Soeharto will also officiate a display of city-sponsored small stores called Gelar Logo Waserda.
The small stores, managed by cooperatives, are part of the administration's program to improve the economy of Jakarta's poor.
As the stores are in neighborhoods they are expected to reduce traffic.
The program, launched by the governor last year, is not very successful, Surjadi said.
Even though the city now had 269 small stores in 265 subdistricts, the members are less than 1 percent of the city's nine million population. (ste)
