President to form prosecutors body

JAKARTA: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to install inaugural members of the Prosecutors Commission after he returns from his visit to the Philippines on Wednesday.

Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh said he raised the matter when he met with the President, just before the latter embarked on his overseas trip.

"Before he (Susilo) went to the United States last month I submitted a list of 14 candidates. He told me (he would appoint the commission members) as soon as possible," Abdul Rahman said.

The President will appoint seven members to the new commission, which will help the attorney general supervise and boost the performance of prosecutors. The commission can recommend the President or the attorney general for dismissal of prosecutors, and will hear appeals filed by prosecutors against rulings resulting from internal investigations. -- JP
