Precious silver at Yanvan Gallery

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Yanvan Gallery has become a can't-miss destination for visitors to Ubud, Bali, with an interest in quality silver jewelry.

Visitors to the gallery on Jl. Monkey Forest will find silver rings, bracelets, necklaces, photo frames, pens, nail files, letter openers and other items.

The gallery stands out from the other buildings on the busy street near Ubud Market with its red facade. The outside of the gallery is done in typical Balinese style, but the interior features an art-deco design.

Yanvan Gallery is known for the classical designs of its silver handicrafts.

"We sell jewelry and other merchandise at reasonable prices," said Natalia Puspita, the gallery's owner.

Prices range from Rp 35,000 (US$3.60) for a silver ring to Rp 2 million ($206) for a silver necklace or bracelet with precious stones.

The gallery was established by Natalia's Dutch husband, Jan Van Schaik, 35 years ago.

While living in Bali, Van Schaik discovered that rubber and silver made a beautiful combination. He then added semiprecious stones such as garnets, pearls, black onyx, moonstones, carnelians, turquoise, blue sapphires and peridots to his creations.

The items sold at the gallery are created by Van Schaik, who is assisted by Balinese and Javanese silversmiths.
