PPP poised to back Mega
JAKARTA: Vice President Hamzah Haz said on Thursday his United Development Party (PPP) would decide later this month whether it would support incumbent President Megawati Soekarnoputri in the Sept. 20 runoff.
The PPP was waiting for the General Elections Commission (KPU) announcement on July 26 of the final results for the first round of the presidential election, he said.
Asked if the PPP was likely to back Megawati in the second round, Hamzah said, "Certainly".
He said the decision would be made during a PPP national leadership meeting.
Hamzah, who has conceded defeat in the July 5 election, confirmed he had already had a meeting with Megawati to discuss a possible coalition. --JP
