Post Office ready for holidays

SURABAYA: The Kebonrojo Post Office in Surabaya has made preparations for the explosion of mail expected during the seasonal holidays.

Deputy head of the post office Syamsu Rizal said here on Thursday that the number of letters and other postal items would skyrocket during the holidays. "We will optimize our human resources performance. They will work overtime and mail deliveries will be done at any time."

He said he would not hire new staff to deal with the seasonal surge.

"Last year the Islamic Idul Fitri holidays and Christmas were very close together. This year Idul Fitri will fall on Dec. 16 and 17, several days before Dec. 25," he said.

The number of postal items and mail would be five times greater than usual, he said. "We will process between 60,000 and 70,000 letters and seasonal greeting cards in the ten days before Dec. 16."

"Usually 70 percent of the total number of letters are sent to other towns, while the remaining 30 percent are incoming letters and cards," he said. --Antara
