Poso Muslims demand rights probe

JAKARTA: Muslim Lawyers Team (TPM), together with several victims of the Poso sectarian conflict, went to the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) on Monday, calling for a thorough investigation into alleged human rights violations in the area.

The victims claimed that they had lost family members and their belongings in the bloody riots. They also urged the commission to facilitate their return to their homes.

"We want a security guarantee for us to be able to go back to our homes," a man from Tentena told Komnas HAM member B.N. Marbun and Soegiri.

Mahendradatta said that they also wanted Komnas HAM to mediate a meeting between Poso residents and the central government so that they could relate their ordeals directly to the government.

"The most urgent thing now is for Komnas HAM to mediate a meeting between the central government and Poso residents," he said. -- JP
