Political parties to electioneer via 'TVRI'

JAKARTA (JP): State-owned TVRI will start on Wednesday airing
prerecorded political debates and orations of the 48 parties
contending the June 7 general election.

Each debate session involves three parties. Each party has two
"monolog" sessions during the official 16-day campaign period
which begins on Wednesday and concludes on June 4.

"The campaigning is a delayed broadcast, so every party takes
a turn recording their sessions, and screening starts on May 16,"
said Djohermansyah Djohan, the General Elections Commission (KPU)
spokesman.

The schedule was established through a draw last Wednesday.

On Thursday, May 27, for instance, two Christian parties and
an Islamic party will debate. They are the Indonesian Christian
Nationalists Party (Krisna), the Justice Party and the Democratic
Catholic Party (PKD).

State-owned radio RRI has also set up a campaigning schedule.
Every day, each party will get three 10-minute oration sessions,
scheduled for 12:10 p.m., 2:10 p.m. and 3:10 p.m.

"Each session will be filled by two parties," Djohan said.

The radio station will also air the debates from 7:30 a.m. to
8:30 a.m. when each session will involve three parties, he added.

Parties are allowed to take their supporters to the debates,
where they can cheer the speakers, but in limited numbers, he
added. "For radio programs, a maximum of 10 supporters is
