Policemen nabbed for car thefts

JAKARTA (JP): Two police officers, a military officer, and another nine members of a car theft gang have been arrested for their alleged involvement in several armed robberies here, South Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Bambang Widaryatmo, said on Tuesday.

Bambang said the police also managed to seize seven cars, including a Kijang van, a Panther van, two Baleno sedans, a Timor sedan, a Lancer sedan and a Taft jeep, from the suspects.

"People who have lost their cars could view the seized cars in the South Jakarta police precinct, probably their car is among them," he said.

He said the suspects were nabbed following the arrest of a member of the gang, identified as Satar, in Pamulang area, South Jakarta on Friday.

He said Satar offered a blue, metallic Kijang van to an undercover police officer, who then held him after determining that the van was a stolen vehicle.

Following further investigation, the police later arrested six suspects, all armed robbers, and three used car dealers, two police officers and a military officer.

The alleged robbers usually operated in Bekasi and Depok.(jun)
