Policeman remains in custody over theft

JAKARTA (JP): The police internal affairs unit has continued to detain a police sergeant for allegedly stealing US$10,000 from his superior.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said yesterday interrogators had not yet finished questioning First Sgt. Adi who has been held since Jan. 28.

Aritonang, however, refused to give more details either on the allegation or the investigation.

Adi was reported by the head of the National Police Directorate of Traffic Police, Brig. Gen. Ansyar Roem, for allegedly stealing the money from a briefcase in Ansyar's official car.

Adi was the personal driver for the general.

Ansyar reportedly noticed the money was missing Jan. 28 and immediately took Adi to the National Police Headquarters for interrogation.

Adi was transferred to the City Police Headquarters early this week for intensive questioning by the internal affairs unit since he was registered as a city police officer.

City Police chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata refused to comment Thursday on the investigation.

"I don't have any comment on this case," he said smilingly.

A reliable police source has said interrogators have yet to find enough evidence to prove Adi's guilt.

"There is so far no hard evidence which could prove that Adi really stole the money," said the officer who asked for anonymity.

"Anyway, the unit will continue with the investigation," said the officer.

Police internal affairs questioned several witnesses, but more evidence was still needed to clarify the case, he said.

"Adi has always maintained his innocence," he added.

Adi reportedly denied the accusation, saying had he wanted to steal money from his superior, he would have done it when Ansyar ordered him to take Rp 1 billion ($100,000) to the bank.

The source refused to say whether the stolen money belonged to Ansyar or the directorate.

Aritonang also refused to clarify the matter or give further statements. "Please... it's just a personal case, not an official one." (cst)
