Policeman dies in Makassar brawl

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Police Chief Sgt. Edi Guntoro was stabbed to death when he attempted to intervene in a brawl on Jl. Andi Pangeran Pettarani on Tuesday night.

"Edi tried to disperse the crowd by firing warning shots, but the mob attacked him. Nearby residents tried to save him but he died en route to the hospital," said Makassar Regional Police chief Sr. Supt. Aryanto Boedihardjo on Wednesday.

Another police sergeant was stabbed when he tried to stop a brawl on Jl. Rapocinni Raya on Tuesday night.

Sergeant Endar suffered severe stab wounds to the abdomen and arm, Aryanto said. Five people were arrested following the two brawls. (27/edt)
