Police wrap up Depok graft case

JAKARTA: The Jakarta Police submitted on Thursday case files
and suspects of alleged corruption to the West Java prosecutor's
office. Seventeen former councillors of the Depok municipality
are implicated.

"The West Java prosecutor's office declared the case files
complete on Feb. 23, 2005," chief of police detectives in the
corruption division, Adj. Sr. Comr. Anton Wahono, said.

The police also handed over receipts and documents relating to
the alleged embezzlement of Rp 9.4 billion (US$1 million) from
Depok's budget, and cash of Rp 1.8 billion as evidence.

The suspects, all from the 1999-2004 term, of whom five have
been re-elected, are charged with misusing public money.

Aside from the 17 suspects, three other suspects from the
Navy, Army and Air Force are now under investigation by the
military police of their respective forces, while the police have
dropped the case against one suspect as he has become permanently
incapacitated due to a stroke. --JP
