Police to use new rank system

JAKARTA (JP): The National Police will change its military- style ranking terminology to an internationally recognized system by July 1, an officer said on Friday.

"We will change general to commissioner, lieutenant general to deputy commissioner, major general to assistant commissioner, and brigadier general into commandant," National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dadang Garnida said as quoted by Antara news agency.

He also said that colonel would be changed to senior intendant, lieutenant colonel into super intendant, major into assistant super intendant, captain into senior inspector, first lieutenant into first inspector and second lieutenant to second inspector.

The new ranking system was first revealed by National Police chief Gen. Rusdihardjo during a recent hearing with members of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission II for home and legal affairs. (nvn)
