Police to train students
JAKARTA (JP): In an effort to curb student brawls, the South Jakarta Police will start a week-long policing course today for high school students, the first course of its kind in Jakarta.
South Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Sisno Adiwinoto told The Jakarta Post that 40 high school students, including students from the SMU 70 state high school, the aviation technical high school STM Penerbangan, and Purnama and PGRI technical high schools will join the program.
"This is one of the results of the meeting between the police and principals of senior high schools in South Jakarta some days ago," Sisno said.
Sisno refused to reveal why the four schools were singled out for the course. Many people speculate the four schools have the most troublemakers.
The school principals submitted the names of the students slated for the course, Sisno said.
He said police are concerned about the recent student brawls and believe a course demonstrating the problems of policing will foster the students' respect for the police.
Some 13 students were killed in fights in the city between January and April. (04)
