Police to seize `True Lies' copies

Police have warned recording companies not to rent or reproduce copies of video cassettes of the banned True Lies, a comedy-action film which has been banned by the government.

"We'll seize video cassettes or laser discs of the film and bring anyone selling them to court," City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Mochammad Hindarto told reporters yesterday.

The controversial film starring by Arnold Schwarzenegger was banned on Saturday, with the government claiming that the decision was made after taking the "people's aspirations" into account.

The announcement ended two weeks of controversy over the screening of the film in the country's movie theaters.

Moslem leaders were split about the film. One camp suggested that True Lies insulted Islam while the other opposed their view, saying that all the attention they had given the film amounted to undeserved publicity.

A number of rental shop owners in the city have placed posters of the banned film at their outlets although they told customers that they do not have video cassettes and laser discs of the film in stock. (bsr)
