Police to conduct traffic operation

JAKARTA: Targeting undisciplined motorcyclists, the Jakarta Police started the second phase of its traffic operations on Tuesday.

Police officers will put proper use of helmets under the spotlight and will take stricter action against offenders.

"We will do more enforcement instead of just giving warnings," city police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani was quoted as saying by Tempointeraktif.com on Tuesday.

He explained that during the first 30-day operation, his officers had reprimanded around 5,000 violators and gave tickets to some 5,000 others. The highest number of violations was for jay-walking.

His office also recorded 300 traffic accidents with 64 fatalities during the period of the operation. -- JP
