Police short-list candidates for body

JAKARTA: Three journalists are among 18 short-listed
candidates for a powerful new police commission.

Sukarni Ilyas of SCTV television station, Lazuardi Adi Sage of
Sinar Harapan daily and Upa Labuhari of Suara Pembaruan are among
nine community figures on the shortlist. They will join nine
police experts for the last stage of a selection process that is
expected to wind up on June 23.

A selection team will propose six candidates each from the
community figure category and the police expert category to
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The commission eventually will be made up of three government
officials, three public figures and three police experts. Its
authority will include consulting with the president on the
dismissal and appointment of the National Police chief. -- JP
