Police shoot two burglars

PASURUAN, East Java: Police shot Wednesday two of five men who had just stolen Rp 1.5 million in cash, jewelry and three cameras from a house.

The head of local police subprecinct, First Lt. S. Nyoman, said the two ignored warning shots and tried to escape, Antara reported yesterday.

"They broke into a house of a woman, Salkah, in the Cangkringmalang village. They tried to escape and hide despite warning shots. They are now in police detention," Nyoman said.

It was an motorcycle taxi driver who saw the burglars, with sickles in their hands, escaping from Salkah's house. He told the police.

The burglars were identified as Tatang of East Java, and Fadeli, a local, while the three burglars who escaped were Sanimin, Samiadi and Amari, all locals.

"We're still busy with security for the election. It's a matter of time before we arrest the other three." (sur)
