Police shoot and kill robber

JAKARTA (JP): City police detectives shot dead on Wednesday a robber who attempted to flee while leading officers to his accomplice in Cimone, Tangerang.

The city police's chief of general crimes, Comr. Tito Karnavian, identified the deceased as 24-year-old Eko Purwanto, a resident of Cimone Jaya Permai in Tangerang.

He said a team of detectives on patrol spotted Eko and his accomplice Dedy robbing Nurhadi, a resident of Jl. Kramat III in Central Jakarta. The victim had just stepped off a Metromini bus plying the Pasar Minggu-Tanah Abang route at the Bendungan Hilir bus stop in Central Jakarta.

"We got Eko but Dedi managed to escape arrest. That's why police asked Eko to lead them to Dedi's residence," Tito said.

The officer said that before arriving at Dedi's home, Eko attempted to escape. He said Eko ignored several warning shots fired by the officers. (01)
