Police seize weapons after clash

MANADO, North Sulawesi: Police personnel confiscated on Saturday hundreds of sharp weapons and two homemade rifles from local residents in East Dumoga and Bolaang Mongondouw subdistricts here, following a bloody feud between the rival subdistricts.

Six were killed and dozens of others, including three police personnel, were injured in the incident on Jan. 4.

Chief of North Sulawesi police Brig. Gen. John Lalo said that the police also were holding four people, suspected of provoking the clashes between the residents of the two subdistricts.

Most of the sharp weapons, and also the rifles, were found buried near residential houses.

"But, some residents voluntarily handed over the sharp weapons and the firearms," John said.

He said that the situation was mostly calm but still tense in the two subdistricts. -- JP
