Police seize 1,000 'porn' books

SEMARANG: Police have confiscated over 1,000 pornography books during raids on several publishing companies here.

Police chief Lt. Col. Matheus Salempang said on Wednesday that several people were arrested in connection with the seizures. He declined to identify the suspects.

Salempang said the operation was conducted following complaints from the public that such books were sold in kiosks near schools and along sidewalks.

Titles of the confiscated books included Kisah Romantis (Romantic Tales), Cantik (Beautiful) and Tragedi (Tragedy).

The provincial office of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) has repeatedly called on the police to eradicate the illegal books. (har)
