Police see Jibril linked to Ba'asyir

JAKARTA: Police interrogated on Monday deported militant Abu Jibril for possible links to terrorist attacks and a connection with cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, the leader of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI), the organization held responsible for terrorist attacks across the country.

"For now, we are charging Abu Jibril with document forgery. The antiterrorism division is handling the case because it is possible that he is connected with terrorism is emerging as the interrogation continues. However, we can't determine whether he has links with Ba'asyir or not at the moment," said National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Paiman.

Meanwhile, Akhmad Kholid, one of lawyers representing Jibril, questioned the motive behind the move to detain his client and the involvement of antiterrorist officers in the interrogation process, saying that it was clear that police were building a link between Jibril and Ba'asyir. --JP
