Police recapture 27 prison inmates

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi (JP): Two days after Sunday's daring jailbreak at Gunung Sari Penitentiary here, local police recaptured 27 of 53 escapees, Makassar Regional Police chief Col. Aryanto Boedihardjo said.

"Some inmates turned themselves in but there were also those who had to be shot for resisting arrest," Aryanto said, adding that relatives of the prisoners supported the search.

Security officers have stepped up security in the regencies of Goa, Maros, Pangkep, Jeneponto and Sinjai to anticipate the prisoners hiding in those areas.

Police are also questioning 10 wardens over the incident as it was reported that the cell blocks were unlocked when the inmates escaped. (27/edt)
