Police raid gambling dens

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Local police have confiscated millions of rupiahs and arrested 80 alleged operators and gamblers during a two day crackdown here, an officer said on Friday.

Detective chief of the provincial police Capt. Agus Andrianto said police raids on gambling dens would continue for the rest of the year as the places had sparked anxiety among the people.

Sixteen of the detainees were caught red-handed in several dens in Medan Teladan district during the operation, which started on Wednesday night. At about the same time, police also nabbed the owner of a gambling den in Medan Timur district, together with three of his employees.

On Thursday, Medan Sunggal Police arrested 10 employees in a den in the district. (39/01)
