Police question bombing suspects

Bogor Police detectives resumed their investigations into two men arrested last Friday for illegal arms possession, although no evidence was discovered on the involvement of Acehnese in a blast at Soekarno-Hatta airport last week.

"We have yet to find evidence (of their being implicated in the bombing), but are continuing with the investigation," Bogor Police chief Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam said, as quoted by detik.com on Sunday, declining to disclose the suspects' statements.

Last Friday, the police arrested four Acehnese on the basis of tipoffs from the public that they had often been seen carrying weapons. The police apprehended them at their rented house near Gunung Putri market. An FN 54 pistol and 21 bullets were seized in the raid.

Two of them were soon released due to lack of evidence, while Doni and Saidi were still in police detention. The police revealed that Doni and Saidi had been in the town no longer than 15 days.

There has yet to be an explanation as to how the two obtained the pistol, but police suspected the two were supporters of the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM).

GAM is suspected of masterminding the bombing behind the UN office building, Central Jakarta, and the more recent one at terminal 2F of the airport, which injured 11 people.

Suspicion has been based on the type of explosive, reportedly similar to that which rocked the North Sumatra capital, Medan, earlier. The alleged perpetrators, GAM members, are due soon to be brought to court. -- JP
