Police probed for bribery

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Several North Sumatra Police officers are being questioned for allegedly taking a bribe from the son of the Karo Regent after the son was arrested in a drug raid.

Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Bambang Priady said on Monday an internal police investigation began after he was informed police officers had received a bribe for the release of Beny, the son of Karo Regent, Sinar Perangin-Angin, after he was arrested on drug charges.

Bambang did not specify how many officers were involved.

Beny and a companion, Irwansyah, were arrested last month during a drug raid in the Sunggal area in Medan.

Police found a package of crystal methamphetamine weighing 0.4 grams inside the car the pair were in.

They later released Beny, dropping all charges against him, while charging Irwansyah for the drugs. -- JP
