Police probe supermarket attack

JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Police detectives are investigating Monday's night attack on a supermarket in Kebayoran Lama allegedly by 50 military men.

South Jakarta Police chief of detectives Maj. Ahmad Alwi identified those hurt in the attack as Yuli Sutrisno, 27, who suffered bruises on her leg; Yuli's brother Aris Sutrisno, 20, who had a bruised head; Bony, 25, had cuts on his right cheek; Markus had facial cuts, and security guard Petrus, 26, suffered facial and head wounds.

Yuli's family owns the Pesona supermarket, which was attacked at about 8 p.m. on Monday.

"We are still investigating the matter and have yet to call people for questioning," Ahmad said on Tuesday.

Yuli, who filed a complaint at the Kebayoran Lama Police station, alleged that about 50 men from the Jakarta Military Command (Kodam) dormitory arrived at the supermarket and parked their vehicles incorrectly in the supermarket's parking lot.

"When the security guards told the men about the matter, they could not accept it. They immediately started running after us. One of them started beating us.

"The others just threw stones and bottles at the supermarket," Yuli said in the police report.

"When speaking in anger, one of the men said he was an Army colonel, and then he continued to beat us up."

Separately, Jakarta Military Command spokesman Lt. Col. Nachrowi said on Tuesday that no military officer was involved in the attack.

"It was local residents who attacked the supermarket. My officers were not involved.

"It seems that a local resident had complained that a child of the supermarket owners was a thief. When the news reached the owners, they got angry and could not accept it," Nachrowi said. (ylt)
