Police probe rebel training
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Irian Jaya Police chief Brig. Gen. S.Y. Wenas said here on Thursday the police were investigating reports that an armed rebel group was conducting military training in Fakfak regency.
"We fear such training will lead to criminal actions and cause anxiety among local residents. I have instructed the Fakfak Police to ban such training," Wenas said.
During routine operations, sharp weapons were confiscated from the training site.
Wenas warned that the police would take sterner measures if the group continued its training and recruited volunteers to the separatist movement. He said the training had caused fear in the neighboring districts, crippling the activities of residents.
Fakfak Police chief Lt. Col. Totok Kasmiarto said the rebel group had recently wounded a policeman, identified as Sergeant Roy Boki. During the incident police fired warning shots to disperse the attackers. (eba/dja)
