Police officer kills partner

PALANGKA RAYA, Central Kalimantan: A police officer accidentally shot and killed his friend during a fight with a group of men on Thursday morning, police said.

Second brigadier Hanafi, 24, was killed by a stray bullet after his partner second brigadier SGO unintentionally fired his gun, a police officer, who declined to be named, said.

The officer said the incident began after five drunken men started a commotion in the city's Bukit Sungai red-light district.

Hanafi and SGO intervened but when SGO went for his gun, one of the drunken men hit his hand with a beam, causing the gun to discharge, the officer said.

Postmortem reports said Hanafi died of two wounds in his neck. He also sustained injuries to his left cheek and both arms.

The five men are at large, while SGO has been detained by police internal affairs. -- Antara
