Police nab gambling coupon vendors

TANGERANG: Tangerang Police arrested on Monday 45 men for selling gambling coupons in several districts of Tangerang regency and municipality.

Police detectives chief Adj. Comr. Adi Saputra said on Tuesday that his officers had also seized from the suspects 379 coupon books, 14 gambling codes, nine gambling scratch cards, seven calculators and Rp 2.4 million (US$260) in cash which the suspects had allegedly obtained from the sale of the coupons.

Tangerang Police chief Sr. Comr. I Ketut Untung Yoga Ana said the arrest was in line with repeated demands from public figures and religious leaders, calling for the police to eradicate gambling in both the regency and municipality.

He added that police usually targeted coupon vendors because gambling started from them and residents would not buy the coupons if they did not sell them. -- JP
