Police make arrests in counterfeit case

SEMARANG: Twenty suspects were arrested by the Surakarta Police over the past week on suspicion of producing and distributing about Rp 700 million in counterfeit money, Central Java Police spokesman Supt. M. Ramlie said on Thursday.

"The suspects were involved in the distribution and production of Rp 50,000 and Rp 20,000 bills. They used to distribute the money in traditional markets and through other cash transactions," Ramlie said.

"We believe they are connected to a nationwide ring of counterfeit rupiah producers in cities such as Semarang and Pekalongan," he added. (har/edt)
