Police lack funds to secure Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): The police need Rp 3 billion (US$272,000) a month to secure the capital when there are special events that require extra security measures, such as the House of Representatives' plenary session or the G-15 summit, an officer said on Tuesday.

Jakarta Police Community Supervision Directorate chief Sr. Comr. Sisno Adiwinoto said the fund is needed to finance meals and allowances for the officers.

A total of 20,000 officers have been deployed to secure the plenary session and the G-15 summit at the Jakarta Convention Center.

Sisno lamented that the city administration's support to the Jakarta Police is small. But he did not mention the figure.

"The city governor should think not only about administrative affairs, but also regional and security affairs," he said in a meeting with the City Council's Commission A for Administrative and Legal Affairs.(jun)
