Police investigate gang-rape rumors

BOGOR (JP): Bogor Regional Police chief Col. Edi Darnadi said on Monday police officers were expecting residents to come forward to provide information about a group reportedly committing gang rapes.

"We don't have any clue about it yet. There weren't any reports made by victims or relatives if the rumors are true," Edi said.

"Those who spread the rumors can be charged under articles of the Criminal Code. This also applies to those who don't report rape cases."

The rumor started in Kemang Batas village of Kemang district after a young mother was reportedly raped by a group of seven wearing "ninja" attire. The woman gave birth the previous week.

Rumors said the group was responsible for five rape cases this month and reportedly struck at night. The rumors caused unease among residents and the burning of a man accused of being a rapist on Sunday.

"We find it difficult to solve the case because there have been no reports made by the victims or relatives," Edi reiterated. (21/nvn)
