Police investigate brawl

JAKARTA (JP): Police have caught a man involved in a brawl in Papago, North Jakarta, which left one dead and one injured, a police officer said yesterday.

According to Let. Col. Abubakar, the chief of the North Jakarta Police District, Ram, 18, was caught in Indramayu, Central Java on the weekend.

Police also discovered a 12-cm-long kitchen knife, which they seized as evidence.

"He admitted during the early stage of interrogation that he was one of the perpetrators," Abubakar said.

The brawl, said Abubakar, occurred last week, leaving one dead and one hospitalized with serious injuries in the neck.

The dead victim was identified as Supardi, 19, who was stabbed in the stomach by members of Ram's gang. Supardi died on the way to the Cipto Mangunkusumo central hospital. The other victim, Sugiarto, 18, was still in hospital, police said.

The brawl started when one of Ram's friends reported to him that he had been beaten by members of Supardi's gang.

"They were all drunk at that time," Abubakar said. (01/bsr)
