Police identify six men arrested in Friday clash
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis said on Sunday that three students and three unemployed men were arrested for possession of Molotov cocktails and rocks in clashes between the police and students in Central Jakarta on Friday.
"I don't know if they are still being held by the police," Zainuri told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
He identified the students as Mixil, a sixth semester student of the Syariah Islamic law division of the State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN), and a member of City Forum (Forkot); Edi Cahyono, a second semester management student of Bung Karno University; and Mahrizal, an industrial engineering student of Mpu Tantular University.
The unemployed men were identified as Chandra Kirana, Aan Maulana and Joko Wibowo.
Hundreds of university students took part in a commemoration of the May 12, 1998 fatal shooting of four Trisakti University students. They clashed with security personnel while rallying near the residence of former president Soeharto on Friday evening.
Witnesses and police said at least 15 people, consisting of three journalists, two students and 10 policemen, suffered head injuries from rocks thrown during the clash.
Most of the protesters, who were demanding that Soeharto be held accountable for alleged wrongdoing and human rights violations, including the May 12 incident, were members of Forkot and students from several universities, including Bung Karno University and Muhammadiyah University,
Zainuri said two police posts were set on fire by the students. (ylt)
