Police hide fangs during campaign

BANDUNG: Supporters of parties contesting the polls here will be able to enjoy their campaign motorcades without having to fear reprimands or punishment from the police.

Local police chief Col. Dody Sumantyawan said recently he had ordered his force not to ticket party supporters who violated traffic regulations during street rallies.

"We will just monitor them and use security measures only if necessary. Rather than risk starting a clash with a huge crowd by ticketing some of them, we will tolerate them as long as they do not endanger other motorists," Dody was quoted by Antara as saying.

Traffic violations during street rallies range from motorcyclists not wearing safety helmets to the dangerous practice of passengers riding on the tops of cars or trucks.

Despite their low-profile stance, Dody said the police were out to do their best -- without having to bare their teeth.
