Police discover homemade rifles

KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Officers from the National Police's elite Mobile Brigade discovered on Wednesday three homemade rifles in a house in Lasusua subdistrict, North Kolaka regency.

The rifles were discovered when the police conducted a regular sweep of houses in the regency.

The owner of the house fled the scene before the weapons were found.

"The rifles were taken to our headquarters in Kendari," said Adj. Sr. Comr. Rahman Baso.

Unlike in the troubled Poso regency in Central Sulawesi, few bombs and firearms are thought to be in circulation in Kendari. However, police still conduct weapons sweeps because residents have been known of make rifles for self-protection. -- JP
