Police detain another suspect in Munir case

National Police officers have detained another suspect in the murder case of top human rights campaigner Munir, according to a source. The suspect sat near the victim in business class on board a Garuda flight on Sept. 7, 2004 from Jakarta to Singapore, the first leg of the flight bound for Amsterdam.

The new suspect was detained late on Wednesday, the source added. The National Police could not be reached for confirmation. Investigators had previously named three suspects in the case, but only detained Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto, a senior Garuda pilot, whose trial began earlier this week.

An independent investigation came to the conclusion that the murder of Munir, who was poisoned during the Jakarta-Singapore flight, was a conspiracy allegedly involving certain state intelligence officials. -- JP
