Police confiscate 25 kg of gunpowder

DEMAK, Central Java: Police confiscated 25 kilograms of gunpowder for the making of firecrackers in a raid Wednesday in Botosengon village, Dempet district, Demak regency.

Demak police chief Lt. Col. Arifudin Kamisi confirmed that eight people are now under investigation. He told The Jakarta Post that they could be charged under criminal law.

Central Java Police Chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman said the police would maintain the operation against firecracker producers. He identified some regencies -- Demak, Jepara, Kendal, Surakarta, Semarang, Pekalongan and Tegal -- as regions that often manufacture and sell firecrackers in violation of the law. (har/09)
