Police arrests 105 criminals

JAKARTA: The Jakarta Police have arrested 105 criminals in an operation staged between Jan. 23 and Feb. 11. Detective chief Sr. Comr. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said on Wednesday the criminals were involved in 76 street crimes including pickpocketing, extortion and robbery.

The police also seized weapons including 27 sharp weapons and a gun. Items seized as evidence included Rp 1.7 billion (US$165,000) in cash, 25.73 kilograms of gold, four cars, three motorcycles, 15 cellular phones, a 4.7-gram gold necklace, eight bags, three wallets and three car rearview mirrors.

Bambang announced that the domain of criminal activity has reached the formerly safe areas of Gambir railway station, Jl. Casablanca and Senayan area in South Jakarta.

He also said that 45 of the 151 crimes that took place from Jan. 1 to Jan. 22 had been handed over to the prosecutors' office while another 33 still needed time to be completed. The police had to halt investigations into six cases as the suspects had died and the rest were still under investigation.

Among the cases handed over to the prosecutors' office were fuel hoarding. -- Antara
