PLN to build power plant in Lombok

MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: State electricity company PT PLN plans to build a coal-powered power plant on Lombok island, West Nusa Tenggara, at a cost of US$54.34 million, a PLN official said on Friday.

The power plant, which would be built in Lembar district, West Lombok regency, would have a maximum capacity of 2x25 megawatts (MW), said Mustiko Bawono, the general manager of PLN's West Nusa Tenggara operations.

Mustiko said of the $54.34 million needed to build the plant, some $16.79 million would come from PLN and the rest would be obtained as bank loans.

The company chose Lombok as the site of the proposed plant because the island is rich in coal reserves. The island has 159.7 million tons of known coal reserves. -- Antara

Residents demand development

CIANJUR, West Java: The Cianjur government has ignored the development of Naringgul district, a local leader claiming to speak for the 18,000 residents of the district said on Friday.

Kusnendar, the chairman of the Naringgul People's Forum, said electricity had not reached some subdistricts in Naringgul, and other subdistricts were isolated because the roads had not been paved.

He said that if their demands for development were ignored, the people of Naringgul would step up efforts to separate from Cianjur regency and merge with Bandung regency.

Naringgul is located some 200 kilometers south of the town of Cianjur. -- Antara
