Planet Hollywood, DHL raise Rp 170m from Charity Golf Tournament

There are many golf tournaments held in Jakarta all year round. However, very few can claim to be held for a truly worthwhile cause.

Planet Hollywood and DHL have made an exception to the rule. This year, they staged their 2nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the prestigious Rancamaya Golf & Country Club in Bogor on Sept. 9.

In September last year, Planet Hollywood and DHL launched their 1st Annual Charity Golf Tournament.

Over Rp 80 million was raised for vital medicine and supplies needed by young children suffering from leukemia.

This year, the goal was to raise Rp 100 million for three orphanages in and around the Jakarta area.

One hundred and fifty six golfers were scheduled for a 7 a.m. "Shotgun Start".

Each participant had paid a Green Fee of Rp 450,000, all of which would be going to charity.

After the round of golf was completed, the participants enjoyed an extensive Planet Hollywood BBQ and buffet lunch.

This was followed by a presentation of trophies and door prizes.

The sale of the green fees alone was not enough to raise the expected Rp 100 million.

A Charity Auction was arranged with amazing prizes being auctioned off; some eventually being sold for well over their real value.

Originally, Rp 150,155,000 was raised. But due to popular demand, the last three door prizes were auctioned for an extra Rp 20 million, bringing the final total to Rp 170 million, all of which will be going to charity.

Planet Hollywood General Manager Andy Ryan explained: "The money will be used to purchase building materials, books and clothing and help to fund the children through school."

Planet Hollywood Public Relations Manager Wiwin Erikawati said: "Planet Hollywood is very active in contributing back to the local community in a number ways.

"Every year, we donate the proceeds from the sale of our Special Edition T-Shirts to various charities in Indonesia.

"AS well as staging our 1st Annual Golf Tournament last year, Planet Hollywood and DHL held a Charity Gala Dinner with many local celebrities performing.

"The event raised over Rp 40 million to buy over 1,000 Sembako packages to give to the needy."

Ryan said, "The Golf Tournament was a wonderful success. To have raised such a large sum of money is a tribute to everybody who participated.

"It was a magnificent day for all involved. And with the money raised, we will truly help to make a difference in the lives of the young orphaned children."
