Pitung's home to be tourism area

JAKARTA: The North Jakarta administration plans to convert Marunda Pulau fishing village into a tourist area with adjacent low-cost apartments.

Spokesman for the municipality, Asep Rohyani, said on Monday that a prominent community figure, Atit, had urged the administration not to evict the fishermen in the area for the conversion.

The people consider their village a historical site. They claim that the legendary Betawi (native Jakartans) hero Si Pitung was born there, said Rohyani.

Asep Rohyani added that the plans were still being worked out, specifically about the consequences on the community and the environment. -- Antara
