Photo expo at Antara gallery

JAKARTA (JP): Antara Journalism Photo Gallery in Central Jakarta is hosting an exhibition of photos by Kompas daily photojournalist Eddy Hasby, which will be open to the public on Wednesday through to May 24.

The exhibition is titled Sugarcane Blues, featuring the situation at Colomadu sugar factory in Karang Anyar, Central Java, which has been abandoned for the past two years due to the monetary crisis.

Eddy observed the factory for almost a year, and produced 40 black-and-white pictures which clearly documented the complex problems gripping sugarcane farmers.

The exhibition will be opened on Tuesday night by Antara news agency chief Mohamad Sobari and Kompas chief editor Suryopratomo.

The exhibition, the 68th ever held by the gallery, will also host a seminar featuring Eddy and sugarcane farming observers. It will discuss the problems of the sugar industry in the country which supports the livelihood of some nine million farmers. (hdn)
