Phone lines at Senen apartment disrupted

JAKARTA (JP): Telephone services to the Menara apartment complex on Jl. Senen Raya, Central Jakarta, were disrupted from Friday to Sunday because a 15-meter primary cable to the building was stolen.

"The cable has a capacity of 1,000 telephone lines," I. Nyoman G. Wiryanata, head of the Central Jakarta office of state telecommunications operator PT Telkom, said on Monday.

He said Telkom employees worked through the night to have the telephone system repaired by 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Wiryanata said he had instructed his employees to improve security and supervision of the company's facilities to prevent thefts recurring.

He said that, according to Law No. 3/1989, people who intentionally disrupt telecommunications systems could face a maximum punishment of four years in jail fines of up to Rp 40 million (US$4,444). (jun)
