Persuasive to investors

The dispute between the shareholders of PT Asuransi Jiwa Manulife Indonesia (AJMI) has affected the bilateral relations between Indonesia and Canada. The problem, which stems from a legal business agreement, should be settled through the legal process in Indonesia.

This means that Canada should not become emotional, and even put out negative propaganda that could hurt the investment climate in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Indonesia had better stay cool in the face of Canada.

The Canadian government should understand that the development of democracy in Indonesia is now in line with the country's economic development.

We understand that the Canadian government wants a guarantee of freedom and justice in a constitutional state like Indonesia. However, the values prevailing in Canada may not be applied in Indonesia, as the two countries have different objectives. Thus, the business situation cannot guarantee freedoms in international relations, as expected by the two countries.

We hope all parties can restrain themselves and think positively, as former U.S. president John F. Kennedy said: "For evil to triumph, it is only necessary that good men do nothing."
