Yanic Perreault scored with 17.8 seconds left in regulation time to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators Tuesday.
Montreal allowed two powerplay goals in the third period but Perreault's late effort gave the Canadiens their second win in a row and broke Ottawa's four-game winning streak.
Oleg Petrov and Doug Gilmour had the other Montreal goals while Perreault and Gilmour both added an assist. Randy McKay had two assists for the Canadiens while Jose Theodore made 30 saves.
Ottawa trailed 2-0 but rallied on goals by Daniel Alfredsson with 6:21 left and Shaun Van Allen with 1:15 remaining in regulation time.
The Senators had their eight-game home winning streak snapped.
In New York, Petr Nedved scored the game-winner at 2:15 of overtime to give the Rangers a 2-1 triumph over the San Jose Sharks.
The Rangers received some good news before the game when Pavel Bure underwent successful surgery on both knees. He had no ACL damage and is now expected to miss only a month, rather than the entire season.
Mike Dunham made 25 saves in his first start for the Rangers while Matthew Barnaby scored the other goal as New York snapped a five-game losing streak.
Teemu Selanne replied for the Sharks on the first shot Dunham faced in the first period. San Jose had its two-game winning streak ended.
In Atlanta, Pasi Nurminen made 30 saves for his first career shutout as the Thrashers halted a six-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Nurminen, taking over from Byron Dafoe, made several brilliant saves as the Leafs dropped to 3-7-1 on the road.
Brad Tapper scored his first goal of the season and only the fifth of his 37-game NHL career after being recalled from Chicago of the AHL before the game.
Ed Belfour made 20 saves for the Maple Leafs.
In Denver, Olaf Kolzig made 35 saves as the Washington Capitals tied 2-2 with the Colorado Avalanche.
Jeff Halpern and Jaromir Jagr scored for the Capitals, who are still three games under the .500 mark.
Steve Reinprecht and Milan Hejduk replied for the Avalanche, which is just 3-5-6-1 at home this season.
