UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Chief of Wirabuana Regional Military Command Maj. Gen. Sulatin said the Armed Forces (ABRI) are "from and for the people", and that when the people face a difficult time, ABRI empathizes.

Sulatin made the remark while visiting a slum in Mangasa, Tamalate district, which his troops have just rehabilitated, Antara reported yesterday. Soldiers have cooperated with the slum dwellers in repairing 10 shanties, making them more decent for people to live in. They also built a small street near the area.

Most of the slum dwellers are pedicab drivers and construction workers. (swe)
