People's aspirations
On May 21, thousands of students (once more) decided that they had the right to fill the streets with their demonstrations. This time their theme was to commemorate the "first anniversary of Soeharto's resignation".
As "common people", my co-workers and I were very much concerned and tired with these demonstrations. We really regretted the students' thoughtlessness and selfishness in insisting on this demonstration. They must know that, without their demonstrations, people are already wary and worried about the day-to-day situation in Jakarta during this campaign period.
Apparently these students acted based on their emotions, and never thought about any of the consequences of their actions. One of the most worrying consequences of their actions, on the part of my co-workers and I (mostly working mothers), is the increase in the prices of staple foods and daily necessities.
As members of the supposedly "intellectual" community, these student groups certainly need to express their feelings on issues in ways that are more intellectual, less violent and more peaceful.
Those students claim that they are doing demonstrations "to channel the people's aspirations". Well! Here's what "the people" want: We want to be able to go to our offices and back to our homes peacefully, without having to worry about our safety and the safety of our family members. Please, listen to our voice!
